How COVID has Changed DJing and Why you Should Start Live Streaming Your Sets
With so many nightclubs closed and impacted by the global pandemic DJs and other artists have found new venues to play – Twitch, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and even Fortnite? Really though, the stage is what you make it in 2021! How will this new necessity for live streaming affect DJs long-term, and should you consider live streaming yourself?
Let’s talk numbers: The live music industry back in 2019 was worth over $20 billion, a full economy of artists, venues, ticket sellers, production companies, vendors and travel operations. When all of this came to a screeching halt in 2020, artists and producers had to get creative with bringing forward virtual concerts and live streaming. While things are beginning to open up again in various parts of the world, most people are not willing to walk away and shouldn’t walk away from the massive online communities that they have built. This means live streaming is far from over, it’s just beginning!
You Own The Club
With live streaming, you now own the club! DJs are becoming more and more expressive by decorating their streaming space to better reflect their unique style, culture, and flavor. Why not take things outdoors and let nature be your backdrop? The options are limitless.
The way DJs are connecting with their audiences virtually is an entirely new experience as well. Rather than being fueled by the roaring crowd, they are seeing hearts, comments, and more flash across the screen.
Piper Hewitt-Dudding, AKA DJ Dilemma, who is from Brighton, performed a set in front of her mom in her back garden cabin, which she described as a “little strange”.
She said: “In the club you get a loud, immediate reaction from the crowd when you drop a great tune. But being able to see so many positive comments from individual people come flooding in all at once was just as exhilarating as hearing it collectively from a crowd.”
A Few Things To Consider
Thinking it’s time to get yourself on to a live stream? While we all hope to see this pandemic come to a close, the reality is that streaming now has it’s own place and is here to stay. It’s not going away, so why not put yourself out there? Here are a few things to consider/quick tips for you to review if you are planning to go live!:
- Use what you have! No need to go crazy with fancy audio and video recording equipment.
- Experiment with different streaming platforms. Try to identify where your target audience spends most of their time and meet them there.
- Don’t be afraid to express yourself by using your background to control the vibe. Have fun with this and just be yourself.
- Put in the time for sound check and be sure to master and balance the sound to the best quality.
- Spread the word. Get social and invite any audiences you have already built, along with friends and family to join in the music! This is where the fun begins.
